L4 French Afternoon

On Friday 2nd May, 2008. L4 enjoyed a French Afternoon. We were all dressed up in blue, white and red t-shirts and denim. We split up into three different groups. One group went to do a wordsearch of French numbers with Mrs Ross. Another group were out in the corridor pretending to be street artists drawing each other. The third group were in the cafe eating their French food like pain chocolate, cheese, baguettes and lots more with Mrs Halliwell. We all enjoyed ourselves and lots of us are hoping to go to France to practise our French!

Internet Safety

Being safe whilst using sites on the Internet or mobile phones is important with so many technologies readily available for us to use.

The children in primary 6 are researching why and how it is important to stay online. Below are their tasks for this week.

TASK 1 - Read the SMART rules and take notes with your partner.

TASK 2 - Look at the SMART posters created by other children and take notes of which ones worked the best and why.

TASK 3 - Create a poster using Publisher with your partner and save in the L6 folders. All entries will be entered to the SMART competition.

Fun In Paris

On Friday 14th March, L7 took an 18-hour bus journey to Paris for a week -long holiday. After finally arriving at the hotel, Fiap Jean Monnet, we unpacked and ate dinner, followed by a disco.
On Sunday, there was a trip to the Sacre Coeur, which means Basilica of the sacred heart. A Palm Sunday service was taking place in this church. There was fantastic paintwork on the ceiling and the view from the top steps was beautiful. The group then walked to Montmartre where many had their portraits done, ate crepes and bought caricatures of themselves. Afterwards there was a River Seine boat trip. The class saw Notre Dame, The Louvre and several beautiful stone bridges. After dinner there was a Paris by night tour where the pupils were driven around Paris to see the as famous restaurants and the Eiffel Tower which was all lit up. The next day there was a buzz of excitement in the air as the L7s boarded the bus to go to Euro Disney. Favourite roller coasters among the L7s were space Mountain, Thunder Mountain and Indiana Jones. Space Mountain was by far the scariest and had three loop-de-loops. Surprisingly, though, it had the shortest queue. Thunder Mountain had a huge queue but was ‘well worth the wait’. It went really fast, quickly turned sharp corners and titled to the inside. Indiana Jones also went ‘really fast’ and had one loop-de-loop. The queue was extremely long and took about thirty minutes to get on the roller coaster.

That night the evening activity was bingo. Among the prize winners were Araminta , Callum , Seumus and Antonia .

On Tuesday it was finally the day to see the Eiffel Tower. Although it was rather windy the sun was shining so it did not matter. After waiting in the queue for the lift most were disappointed that they could not climb to the top as it was closed due to high winds. However, they managed to board the lift up to the second floor. The view was ‘stunning’ but it was cold so everyone came down with in thirty minutes. Next was Aqua Boulevard-the water park. Many people marked this outing as the favourite part of the Paris Trip. With outdoor flumes and a wave machine, everyone had a ‘brilliant time’. Many people loved the flumes more than anything else. You can go down flumes on lilos, boats and yellow double lilos. That night there was a disco for Dundee High pupils only and many people boogied the night away.

Finally it was Wednesday and time to tidy up their rooms, pack their bags and head to Calais for shopping before starting the long journey home. The whole experience was brilliant and all of L7 wish the L6s great fun next year!

Mark Beaumont Visits Our School

On Thursday 27 March 2008,the round the world,record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont visited his old school to tell us about his great adventure.He talked to us about all the different countries he had cycled through.He is going to write a book about his experiences and there will soon be a film on BBC2 about his gruelling feat.

Mark started his career cycling from Dundee to Oban and then he cycled from the far north of Scotland to Land's End,the furthest away point of England.After that,he conquered the world in a record-breaking 194 days and 17 hours.

His trip started and ended at the Arc De Triomphe in Paris.He sponsered £1 per mile and in total he cycled for a backside-numbing 18,000 miles.Mark had 10 punctures but that did not stop him beating the previous record by three months!

We interviewed Matthew Reid (L6) and asked what he thought about Mark's feat.He said he was "very excited about meeting someone who broke the world record".That view was unanimous among the whole school.Everyone was enthralled by hearing of Mark's adventures.

Here is our hero, Mark Beaumont, at the Radisson Hotel where some L7 children are there to
see him and celebrate his achievement of cycling around the world in 194 days and 17 hours. Mark spoke to the invited guests about his great achievement and even mentioned out Ted Bear and out school. There were lots of people there but Mark still managed to come over and be interviewed by some of our RadioHigh reporters for the next show.

Mark is very busy with interviews and trying to get used to walking again rather than cycling but he has promised he will come to our school in the very near future.

Dougal and Findlay fron L6A wrote a report about Remembrance Day Parade for RadioHigh. You can read what they wrote below:

On Friday 9th November 2007 The High School of Dundee held their Remembrance Day Parade. Halge sat and watched the parade from the classroom window. This is what he saw:The cadets marched on, followed by the pipes and drums and Halge loved the sight even altghough he was watching from a distance. The cadets were all lined up and the Sergent Major gave an order for the colours to be presented. The Pipe Band then played Highland Cathedral. A poppy reef was presented by Alice Burnet and Duncan Leese and the head boy and girl. There was a two minute to allow us all time to think about the many people who gave their lives in the first and second world wars. It is also a time to think about other wars being fought today. The minister said a prayor. The Sergent Major dismised all of the pipes and drums and the cadets. All of the other High School pupils quietly walked back to their classrooms.Lots of people wore a poppy as a mark of respect. In 1918 gun shots died down in Belgum France and Germany marking the end of the First World War. After four years of fighiting more than 20 million men and woman were dead. World War Two began on the ist September 1939 . World WarTwo was the most blood sheading war ever and a tough war for the United Kingdom.

So Mrs Tonner why choose Jack and the Beanstalk?
I choose Jack and the Beanstalk because Rauld Dahl wrote it and it had a very intresting story to it.I also choose it because it is a story that the whole school know.This is not just the standard Jack and the Beanstalk this is funnier and more exciting to watch with the addition of music.

How long did it take you to prepare for this play?
OH This play took ages to prepare for we had actually already done this play the year before but the fire alarm went off 3 times when we were performing to the school which spoilt the play.

Who is your favuorite character?
That would have to be the giant.

Do you use the same costumes for other plays?
So you found out ! I do use the same costumes for other plays such as Zoom and the Little Red Riding Hood assembly I did the week before.

Was it fun ?
It was great fun getting everyone to learn all of there lines, songs and parts but best of all was watching the audience reaction!

Voices Of The World - November

This month's task for our global project Voices Of The World was created by L2W. The task for all the different countries around the world was to sing and record Twinkle Twinkle in their own language using a backing track Mrs Tonner created. The children then created pictures in Paint to go with the song. Look at the finished results on L2W's wikispace. At the end of November the songs from all around the world are released by Mrs Tonner so we can hear all the different voices singing Twinkle Twinkle in their own language.

Let's Get Mobile

Mobile phones are now part of our lives where we can use them anytime, anyplace, anyhere. The 'anytime, anyplace, anywhere' slogan does not always work due to restrictions that are in place. In hospitals we are not allowed to use mobile phones as they interfere with the hosipital equipment. In garages mobiles should be turned off when in the forecourt just like when we come into classrooms.

Before we start learning about how to use mobile phones constructively, let's find out what we know about mobile phones at the present. How young do you think you should be before you have a mobile phone? How much should you pay for a mobile phone? What devices do you want on a mobile phone? Where should you be allowed to use them?

These are just a few questions given to the L7 children who are exploring the potential of mobile phones.

Mobile Phones - Good Or Bad?

Today four primary seven children, Mrs Tonner and Mrs Rose went on the train to Glasgow to the SECC. Olivia, Jenna, Ronan and Rory were helping Mrs Tonner with her presentation about mobile phones in education. We wanted to show how they could be used constructively. At the end of the talk we invited our guests to ask us a question about mobile phones using their phones. On our way home we hope to use Mrs Tonner's phone to look at the blog and answer their questions. Let's hope they are not too tricky!

On Sunday 5th August 2007, Mark Beaumont cycled out of Paris on a solo attempt to break the 18,000 mile World Record to become the fastest person to have ever circumnavigated the globe by bicycle. Ted Bear has packed his case ready to meet Mark in Iran. Each week Ted will tell everyone a little bit about his adventures with Mark with a little help from the children at The High School of Dundee's Junior School.

Brunel came to stay with me for a few days. We did lots of things together. The weather was great so we spent time outside in the garden on swing, the slide and the trampoline. After that we had tea and then played tig with me sister Aamira. Brunel played fairly and we all had fun. Before bedtime he had a turn on my PS2. It was a wrestling game and he did well for a beginner. In my house Brunel liked to sit on the red leather sofa!

When Brunel came to stay he had a healthy breakfast! It was one of my favourites – banana sandwich. We went to Piperdam for the day. It is a Country Club very near me and we go quite often. There is a big swimming pool there and Brunel had a dip but he preferred to lie on the sunbeds beside the pool. He looks very relaxed with his sunglasses on! When we came home Brunel and I went out to play in my garden. He was very good on the monkey bars because he is a bit of a monkey!

The Easter holidays are just about started and the children are very excited. This morning we had our curch service at St Andrew's Parish Church led by Mr Petrie. The primary 4/5 choir sang 'Something To Sing About' expertly. Rory and Alice from primary 6 delivered their readings with confidence.

This is the first time the Junior children have visited St Andrew's Parish Church. Here is a little history about the church:

It was completed in 1774;
The spire rises to 139 feet;
There is a splendid west tower with a classical steeple;
The clock now in St Andrew’s steeple was made by James Ivory, Dundee.

Have a wonderful holiday boys and girls and don't eat too many Easter eggs.

Back On Home Land

It is 5.07 pm and we have just arrived back in England. The journey through France was bearable with various entertainment in the form of music and DVDs. Have to say that it did not live up to our entertainment yesterday where various dedications were given in various formats like opera stlye. Each teacher on coach 2 delighted the children with their unique approach to each dedication. The children obviously recognised the wealth of talent on their coach that they requested a bus idol to which the teachers glady accepted. The competition was tough with each teacher singing two numbers. Mr Jack was the outright winner though mainly on sympathy votes!!Requests for another bus idol were given but Mr Jack is now in retirement.

Today we stopped tr Calais shopping centre where everyone managed to find something to spend their money on. In a short time we plan to stop for tea then it is the long journey home

Today we set off early to visit a Science museum which was enormous. The children spent a few hours exploring the many exhibits and interactive areas. After a picnic outside it was straight to the swimming where the children and teachers had a whale of a time.

We arrived home in time for tea then it was the farewell disco where the boys showed their break dancing moves on the floor. Not too sure about the teachers' moves though!!!

Time for bed and packing for a busy day tomorrow.

The Day We Have All Been Waiting For

Today we all went to Disney. What a fantastic time we had being tossed and turned and all the rides. The screams from the children and teachers as they took to the sky on Space Mountain could be heard all over the park. This was a day to remember by all as it was non-stop action from the moment we left the hotel. To calm things down at night the children are currently participating in a game of French bingo.

What A Day

Today was packed with lots of things to see. Our first stop was Montmartre which rises out of the flatness of Paris with its myriad of small streets which have been both homes and studios to a preponderance of the west's great 19th and 20th century artists from Degas to Monet and Picasso to Dali. At Montmartre we visited the Sacre Couer with had magnificent features inside and out. Next to Montmartre's new art market centres on Place du Tertre where “starving” unknowns offer paintings for sale. Many children had their portriats done which I am sure you will all be looking forward to seeing. You can decide if the picture is a caricature or the real thing!

Next we hopped on the bus and were taken to the Eiffel Tower. Before taken the journey up the tower we ate lunch first then start ascending the magnificent tower. The children loved the journey in the lifts with many squeals of delight being heard.

After the Eiffel Tower it was straight down to river for our boat trip on the Sienne. The scenery was fantastic with the added excitement of a pigeon inside the boat!!

It was back to the hotel for tea then the creme de la creme - a tour of Paris by night. Out commentator delighted us with his witty lines and endless information.

Lights out when we came back as DISNEY tomorrow.

It Feels Like The Middle Of The Night

It feels like the middle of the night. We had to put our clocks forward two hours rather than one resulting in gettting up in what feels like the middle of the night. Miss Cardno was certainly bright and breezy but I can't say that much for myself (Mrs Tonner). We are all looking forward to an action packed day. Come back later to read all about it.

We are just about to enter the Eurotunnel and to our left is a huge white horse. Not a real one but a creation by Charles Newington using Blanc De Beirges slabs which are noted for their durability. This was created for the milennium and it is hoped it will still be in place in a thousand years time.

It is just past 6 in the morning and we have just stopped for breakfast. The children headed straight for the cooked breakfast that the staff looked a little worried as the food quickly disappeared. Although it is VERY early in the morning the children are bright and talkative, not like some members of staff.

Here we go, here we go here we go to PARIS. The time is exactly 8.30pm and no tears from children but a few from staff. The bus is surrounded by the sounds of high pitched voices laughing and talking. The trip of the Junior School has now started.

A New Radio Show

A new radio show is currently being created by a group of children in primary 7 at The High School of Dundee, Scotland and children in year 5 at Capel Le Ferne Primary School, England. The children are going to use the latest technology to create a show that brings both schools together as one voice. Our first show will not be until after the Easter holidays. Wish us luck.

Well done to Kirsty Stout who won this year's primary 7 Leng Medal. Kirsty will now have to sing her winning song at the Caird Hall in Dundee when the anual Spring music concert is held. The children in primary 1 used our new LG Shine mobile to take pictures of their partner's feet. Next week we are going to try and match the pictures to the owner. I think it will be difficult as they all look the same!!!
